Join us for a timely and thought provoking discussion with our Founder Cerrita Smith, Music Therapist, EMDR Therapist, and Organisational Consultant, and an all-black panel of Therapists from across the world, exploring Race, Racism, Black Identity, and Culture in Therapy and Music Education.
Hosted by BBC1xtra Radio Broadcaster and Presenter, Richie Brave, panellists will explore personal and professional experiences from their Therapy practice and training, giving consideration to:
- Race, racism, and identity in the training course experience
- The need for increased Black representation in the therapy profession
- The colonial hierarchy in higher education (and music education more broadly) and its impact
- Working with mental health and racial trauma in therapy within healthcare institutions
- The role of music and creativity in mental health and wellbeing
The event will combine a lively panel discussion and will be followed by an extended Q&A supporting all in attendance to in taking discussions forward. The discussion will be preceded with a performance by the acclaimed soprano Rachel Duckett, who made her BBC Proms debut this year. Nsamu Moonga, MMT, is a licensed multidisciplinary music therapist born in Zambia. He is an expert in anti-oppressive and non-interference practices. He holds a diploma in Psychological Counselling, a BA in Psychology, and a Master’s in Music Therapy from the University of Pretoria. His work spans health, lifestyle, human sexuality, spiritual experiences, and psychosocial support, focusing on Indigenous methodologies and critical theory-informed approaches.
Nsamu has served as the WFMT Regional Liaison for Africa and is involved with several international associations in music therapy and creative arts therapies. As a PhD candidate at the University of Pretoria, his research explores the use of Indigenous Musical Arts in managing cancer-induced anxiety and distress. An advocate for holistic health practices,
Nsamu is also a classically trained singer and an avid runner. He enjoys mentoring youth, writing mystical poetry, and exploring diverse culinary experiences.

Jamal J Glynn is a registered Music Therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council in the United Kingdom (HCPC). He holds a BA in Musical Arts from the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, and a M.A. in Music Therapy from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, UK.
He offers under the North West Regional Health Authority in Trinidad and Tobago Music Therapy to inpatients and outpatients at the St Ann’s Hospital including the Forensic ward, Caura Substance Abuse, Prevention & Treatment Centre, Chaguanas Psychiatric Clinic, Barataria Mental Health and Wellness Centre, The Child Guidance Clinic. His work focuses on psychoanalytically informed approaches.
Being particularly passionate about exploring the benefits of using the steelpan in Music Therapy within the mental health setting, he wrote his dissertation on this subject in 2011. He is interested in providing a Caribbean perspective to existing knowledge of music therapy interventions and has conducted research focusing on clients living in Trinidad and Tobago. Results of his research have been published in the Caribbean Medical Journal. (Music Therapy and its relationship to Schizophrenia – A pilot study, Caribbean Medical Journal, volume 75 No. 2 December 2013, (pg 8-13)
He is also a member of the British Association for Music Therapy (BAMT), The Association of Psychiatrists of Trinidad and Tobago (APTT) as an adjunct and the recently formed Creative Arts Therapies Collective of Trinidad and Tobago (CAT week TT). He is also a member of the Steelband Hadco Phase II Pan Groove.

Georgi-Ann Morgan is a Music Therapist based in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. After qualifying as a Music Therapist at the Guildhall School of Music. She has worked across the Education sector for the Cayman Islands government. She is the first Music Therapist employed by the government and works across mainstream and SEND provision schools.

Cerrita Smith is a Music Therapist, Organisational Consultant, Lecturer, and Clinical Supervisor. She holds a Bachelor of Music from Cardiff University and MA in Organisational Consultancy and Leadership from the Tavistock and Portman Clinic. She read a Masters in Music Therapy at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK. Since qualifying over 12 years ago she has worked with all ages in broad range of settings in the UK including Adult Psychiatry and Addictions services in the NHS, and with vulnerable children and their families in the charitable sector, education service and in private practice. Cerrita now divides her clinical work between the field of adult psychiatry in the NHS, and private practice with Children and Adults who have experienced complex trauma. She has a special interest in Complex Trauma, Mental Health, and in the field of Adoption.
Alongside her work as a Therapist, Cerrita works as an Organisational Consultant at Cync, which she founded. Her Consultancy and Coaching work has seen her support a broad range of organisations in Arts and Media, Healthcare, and in Educational sectors. She is particularly interested in working with change management and understanding trauma and its manifestations in teams and organisations. In 2017 and 2018 she set up and delivered a community-based music project in Rwanda, East Africa, training teachers and communities to use music to support therapeutic goals and support education for vulnerable children and families. Cerrita has written for professional publications, has spoken at national and international conferences, on BBC radio, and is a visiting lecturer at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she also leads their Therapy Outreach Service. She is a flautist and a singer, and as a guest performer she sang with East London Music Group for the premiere of, :Insert Expletive Here: (by E. Jarman-Pinto) at Richmix, London.

Richie Brave is a Presenter, Broadcaster & Writer hailing from South London. He is known for his hard-hitting interviews and honest social criticism, which challenges people to think and reflect on themselves. Aside from his media experience, he has amassed over a decade’s worth of work in the community and uses this to shape and create engaging dialogue and interviews. Richie is host of BBC 1Xtra's "1Xtra Talks" exploring the lived experiences of Black people across the UK.
Richie has interviewed the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Ryan Coogler, Angela Bassett, HER, Master P, Mr Eazi, Wale and many others. Through 2018/19 he regularly co-hosted the Sunday Morning show with Penny Smith on Talk Radio, exploring the tabloids, politics and debating current affairs. This versatility speaks to his ability to engage anyone.
